Themes - Big Ideas

Today, we discussed the difference between plot and theme. Plot is the main events in a story. Themes are big ideas (patience, kindness, perseverance, anger, friendship etc). We have been focusing on the themes or big ideas from our own reading books and class read-alouds. Please write about a theme you've discovered in your reading or class read-aloud and give an example. I will write one as well! Please read my example before you write your blog entry.
**Attention: Setting is where a story takes place. Please focus on the THEME (messages in the story).

  1. In The One and Only Ivan, one theme is optimism, making the best of a situation. Ivan, although he is lonely, chooses to call his cage a "domain". He sees it as his home and does not complain or get angry even though he has not had freedom for 27 years. Ivan still finds a way to be interested in things and people around him. He is friendly despite being in a cage and lonely.

    1. James, you are right, How to Steal a Dog is about homelessness. Please write more about the themes. What are the messages in the story? Stealing a dog is presented as a complex problem. Is it right or wrong for Georgina to steal to help her family?

    1. Kate, I think you mean that the SETTING is the house. Setting is where a story takes place. THEME is the big idea, what the message in the story is really about.
So, for Winn Dixie, the setting is in Florida, the theme is to be nice to one another.

    1. Robby, the plot of the story (the events in the story) deal with how to get money. Yes, a theme is how how hard life can be when you don't have money.

    1. Camille, the setting is at an airport. What are some messages from the story? The theme is about the big ideas in the story. Remember, the boy must be brave and responsible. What other things can you remember that were big ideas?

  7. In How Many Days To America, the theme is not giving up, trying hen things are at the worst, and making things work. You know when they ran out of water and food? They caught rain water in buckets and fished. Then they saw land, they swam toward the land, but ere rejected and were given fruit. They still did not keep at it until they reached America. Also, their motor broke down. They tried to go back but were shot at. So, they used the sail. People were brave in times of war to leave everything behind and keep going and not complain. I know I would!

  10. In How Many Days To America the setting first started in a country I think. Then the mean people told them to move and shipped them on a boat. When we were talking about How Many Days To America I said the mom was selfless to give up a lot of her stuff even her ring OMG.
When we were reading that part I was thinking "oh no she didn't". Then when they were on the boat and they were all scrunched up, then the men saw land. Wait! I forgot a part. The woman made a sailor thing so they could sail.
Okay back to the other part I was talking about. Then the men saw land
and they swam to it. Wow they must of been brave to do that. In the end
they got to land. I think it was on thanksgiving but what I know was that they were HUNGRY.

    Sincerely Chloe Brissett
