The Taste of Texas

Last week we visited the largest independently owned restaurant in Texas, The Taste of Texas! Mrs. Hendee told us about the history of the restaurant and SO much about the history of Texas. She has collected many artifacts, art and historical records to display in the restaurant. Think back to our trip. What are some FACTS you learned? What artifact did you enjoy seeing in person? What experiences did you enjoy? What will you always remember? Please write several complete sentences.

  1. I was so impressed with my first visit to The Taste of Texas. Mrs. Hendee's knowledge of Texas history is incredible! I am so thankful that she was able to teach us. I learned many facts about Moses Austin, Santa Ana, Sam Houston and Gail Borden. I thought it was interesting that Sam Houston's cursive signature read I Am Houston. I will always remember being shut in the freezer and standing by the tree that grew from a pecan found on Stephen Austin's property.

  2. It was very interesting to see so many Texas artifacts. I thought is was cool that when Houston was named after Sam Houston he changed his signature to I am Houston. I learned that Gail Borden was the very first tax collected and many other things. The paintings with hidden pictures inside the pictures were amazing. It was fun to go in the giant refrigerator.

  3. I enjoyed the taste of Texas because all the great artifacts. I really liked the I am Houston autograph and that she had the father, mother and grandfather of Texas autographs. Oh and you can not forget the six flags over Texas because she had all of those and ,and she had that exact replica of the Come and take it flag, The battle of Gonzales cannon, Bowies knife and Betsy. I also learned a lot about Gail Borden like he was the first tax collector, real-estate agent ,brought the first printer to Texas, invented Borden milk company and helped find Houston and that is the reason I chose Gail Borden. But you can't forget the big refrigerator.

I could not imagine opening rapping paper on christmas day and then inside is a canon! That would be pretty crazy! I also thought it was cool how Mrs. Hendee had Kate and Philip dress up. One thing I learned was that Moses Austin was a roof builder. I did not know that that is so cool! I'm definitely asking my parents to take me to eat there. It was so much fun!

  12. My favorite artifact was the giant bear 🐻 even though it had nothing to do with Texas it was still cool. I also thought her I am Houston signature was weird and very cocky. Her Davy Crockett signature, Raccoon skin hat and rifle 🔫. I also thought the picture within the picture was very unique and cool the artist 🎨 who made the pictures was very creative resilient and persistent because it must have bean hard to draw faces but still make a picture and took a loooong time.
