Reading Strategies

Dear Class,
You have been learning about how to use reading strategies to improve your reading skills and comprehension. As we know, reading is thinking! Reading is more enjoyable when you can connect to what you are reading and think about how your reading relates to what you already know.
Please tell us about the reading strategies you use when you are reading and why you like them. Can you give an example of a reading strategy you used in your reading recently? Be sure to write four to five complete sentences with the correct punctuation and capitalization.

  1. When I don't under stand a part I go back and reread it and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Also when one of my siblings is watching TV and I'm reading I just get some headphones or ear plugs and its works. When I am stuck on word I would just go to the dictionary or search the word. Sometimes I like to picture it in my head to get a vision of what's going on.

  6. If I want to remember something I REREAD IT 7 times. Also sometimes a miss something so I go back and REREAD. Sometimes my sister is watching TV and I am reading, I go into another room or area. If you get disracted I always put a bookmark in my book so I don't lose my place. People who get really into the book but then get disracted, I would recommed sitting somewhere that there is not a device. Hope everyone is having a good day :) :) :) :) :)

  8. I like to infer when I can. For example, I know + is addition this is some infering I do: 2+2=4 so 8+8=16. I also like to reread when someone is talking I could be reading and a dog barks outside I go back and read the WHOLE PAGE again. Have a good night!

  9. When I get stuck on a word that I can't figure out the meaning of, there are two things I do depending on the type of book. Let's say it's a picture book: I skip the word, look at the picture, and hopefully decipher the meaning. Let's say it's a book with no pictures: sometimes there are similarities between words. For instance usual and usually. So if I don't know the word, I try to connect the meaning to a word I DO know. If all else fails, I go to the dictionary! Goodnight!

  13. When I get stuck on a word I reread the sentence over again. I also will get a dictionary or look in the glossary if the book has one. Reading slowly is also a good strategy for me.

  18. Hi Mrs. Kottler. The strategies that I use for reading are re-reading and breaking up the words. I use them because it helps me understand the book. For example, I was reading a book (I forgot what the name was) and I skipped a few words and so I kept reading and I didn't understand so I went back and re-read the parts that I skipped. When I break up words it helps me. Once when I was stuck on a hard word, I broke up the word and was able to figure the word out. Have a great day!!

  19. Hi Mrs. Kottler! The strategies that I use for reading are re-reading , predicting, and breaking down words. I can use re-reading by going back a sentence or 2 and re-read it . I can use predicting by when I am in the middle of a story I can predict that something will happen later in the story. I can use breaking down words by if I don't know a word I can break it down and figure out how to say it. Have a good day!
