Themes - Big Ideas

In reading workshop, we have been learning about the difference between plot and theme. We have been discussing the themes or big ideas from our own reading books and class read-alouds. Please write about a theme you've discovered in your reading or class read-aloud and give an example. I will write one as well!

  1. In The One and Only Ivan, the theme of perseverance or not giving up is a big message. Ivan shows perseverance when he paints day after day and even all night long. He knows he is working on a project to help free Ruby. He does not give up.
What themes (messages and big ideas) are you reading about?

  2. I just finished the book Matilda and one of the BIG themes in this book is good vs. evil. Miss Trunchbull is the most evil headmistress of all time! When Matilda starts school she is HORRIFIED of her. Miss Trunchbull is so proud of her arm that she can grab a kid by the neck and toss them out the window as far as she can! Miss Honey is the good one. She is Matilda's teacher. She is very pleased with Matilda. This is one of my favorite themes ever!

    Sincerely,
    Abby

  3. My book is called Darkbeast. One of the biggest themes is rebellion. Keara sneaks away to see an amazing play. She also fails to kill her darkbeast (Which happens to be a raven called Caw. Now she is running away from home because Betisis (A god) is angry at her. So is the priest. She is also fearful of the wrath of a god and priest. But most of all it is friendship and love. Keara loves Caw. She has put her life in danger for him. Caw loves Keara. He gives her advice. The two are inseparable. I think this is an amazing book!
