Native American Study

We are beginning our unit study on Native Americans. Our class focuses on 6 main regions where Native people lived. Here are the tribes our class will study:



  • The Chumash - California Coastal Region

  • The Hopi - Southwestern Desert Region

  • The Blackfeet - Northern Plains

  • The Comanche - Southern Plains

  • Cherokee - Southeast (Mountains)

  • Ojibwa - Eastern Woodlands / Great Lakes Area


What tribe are you studying? What is an interesting fact your have already learned? What do you still wonder about?

  1. The Chumash made acorn cake, and made boats and went fishing. Acorns were very important to them. I wonder if they ever mined for gold.

  2. I'm studying the Cherokee tribe. One thing I know about the Cherokee is that the walls of their winter houses are made of mud and clay. The roofs are made of brush and rivercane. Their summer house is a logcabin. I'm still wondering, how many hunters go in a hunting group?

  3. I am studying the Cherokee. They build their house out of mud and clay and the roof is made out of brush cane. I am still wondering what language they speak. I went to Cherokee, North Carolina this summer and met a full blooded Cherokee Indian.

  4. I'm studying the Cherokee tribe also. I learned that they are farmers and hunters. But they farm all kinds of things! I'm still wondering about what they do for fun?

  5. I'm studying the Ojibwe tribe. They hunt for deer,turkey,squirrel,and rabbit. I wonder if it's yummy?

  6. I am studying the Comanche tribe. One interesting fact about the Comanches is that they lived in tipis. Also, they did not fish but they hunted. I wonder what kinds of weapons they used, and what animals they hunted.

  7. I'm studying the Hopi. I learned that the Hopi live on top of each other in adobe houses. I'm still wondering about what they did clothes.

  8. I am studying the Ojibwa they are from the Eastern Woodlands in the Great Lakes Region of the United States. I learned that their houses are made of birchbark and the houses are called wigwams. I would like to learn about how many people can live in a wigwam. I also would like to learn what do they do on rainy days?

  9. I am studying the Blackfoot tribe. They live in the northern Great Plains. They ate bison.The bison provided many things, clothes,blankets,meat and tipis. They celebrated the Sun Dance and ate ground squirrels! I would like to learn how they got named the Black foot tribe.

  12. I'm studying the Hopi. They are part of the Southwest region. I learned that they made houses called Adobe. They are made of clay and sand.I am still wondering if they had any dancing. Also what they would get their cloths from and what they would wear.

  13. I am studying the Comanches. They lived on the great plains.They believed in the evil spirt which brought unhappiness. They also believed in the main spirit which brought joy and happiness. I am still wondering how many people could fit in a tipi?

  15. I am studying the Ojibwe tribe. They lived near the Great Lakes. The Ojibwe made Wigwams as their hoses they used twigs for the frame of the house.

  17. I am studying the blackfeet. I learned that every year they go on bison hunt.It is the only time they all get together. I want to learn how they name their tribes.

  18. I learned some more facts about the Cherokee. Corn is a favorite meal, they are farmers and hunters, the forced removal from their homelands is known as the trail of tears, and in the summer kids under eight years old wear nothing.
