Native American Study

We are beginning our unit study on Native Americans. We've learned that there are 6 different regions in North America that native people lived in. Here are the tribes our class will study:

  • The Chumash - California Coastal Region

  • The Hopi - Southwestern Desert Region

  • The Blackfeet - Northern Plains

  • The Comanche - Southern Plains

  • Cherokee - Southeast (Mountains)

  • Ojibwa - Eastern Woodlands / Great Lakes Area

Which region or tribe are you interested in studying? Please explain why.

  1. I am interested in the California coastal region because I usually always thought about Native Americans who lived in the desert or plains and don't know anything about Indians who live near water. I hope I can study the Chumash tribe. However, all of the different tribes look so intriguing.

  3. I am interested in studying comanche, cherokee, and chumash tribes because I don't know anything about them and I think they sound really fun to study. The reason I am interested in chumash is because I have never heard of an indian tribe near water. Those are my top 3 - I haven't picked out of those yet.

  5. We just started native americans and I would to study the ojibwa, the cherokee, and the
comanche. I wold probably want to do the ojibwa because it sounds inter interesting how they hunted for food. I also want do the cherokee tribe because it also sounds very interesting because they lived up in the mountains so I think it would be really cool to see how they survived in the mountains. And I want to do comanche because they did a lot of war. That is what I want to study for native american tribes this year.

    1. Clay, luckily although we will be in different groups, we will still learn about every tribe from each others' research and presentations. You are right, it would be A LOT of work to research all six of these tribes on your own.

  14. I am very interested in the Chumash tribe because they found tar in the area. I know that they used it to seal boats, but I wonder if they used it for anything else. I also want to study the Comanche and the Cherokee tribes because I wonder what life was like where they lived. The Comanche roamed most of the Great Plains region because they were one of the first Native American tribes to have horses. I would also like to know how the Cherokee lived in the mountains.

I am very interested in Chumash tribe because they learned how to ride horses and they are the only tribe that had tar and they were good at hunting and they are good at farming and chasing buffalo. They skin the buffalo and use the skin for there teepees and blankets and food from the meet. They kill square and rabbits and also deer. They use the antlers for tools and the meet to eat.
